chair fetish

here are a few pics from a recent trip to the IMA to see the “More Than Four Legs: A Closer Look at Chairs” show. the installation showcased work from Carla Atwood Hartman, whose grandparents are the legendary Charles and Ray Eames.

rejects

sometimes projects receive a tiny bit of praise and are published. but a majority of the time projects are brushed aside to make way for better solutions. below is a rejected design direction for a series of computer how-to books written by and for women.

time-traveling

while taking a bike ride yesterday evening, i passed an old car parked out on the street. i couldn’t identify the model as i rode by. but what i did notice was that for a split second the nostalgia of that car, coupled with the surrounding old houses made me feel like i had pedaled fast enough to go back into time. it was a neat feeling, even for that split second in deep imagination. i went back the next morning to snap this picture:

green

we’re going green. great!…because i love green. but really, what i’m talking about here is the trend of creating more environmentally friendly products and buildings. i’ve just recently completed a new cover design for a book titled Green BIM: Successful Sustainable Design with Building Information Modeling written by Eddy Krygiel and Brad Nies (due in stores spring of 2008). this will be the first book to show architects how to create sustainable designs by using building information modeling, or BIM.

direction

well, rather than keep thinking about it, i’ve decided to jump right in and try my hand at blogging. granted, i don’t know exactly what i’m doing or what i’m trying to accomplish here, but bear with me as i experiment and learn. and maybe, if we’re lucky, we all might stumble upon something new and interesting and grow a bit.

even though i just proclaimed not to know in advance what i’m trying to accomplish, i do know that i would like to use this site to ramble about design. i am constantly being inspired and moved by various photographs, illustrations, fonts, colors, buildings, nature, clothing, furniture (like my wierd chair fetish) and so on. there is great design all around us, whether it’s God-made, man-made, God-inspired or just accidental. sometimes i get so excited when i see beautiful things, that i want to share my excitement and the source of that excitement with everyone. and that is where this weblog comes into play.
